The 6th International ICST Conference on Communications and Networking in China (Chinacom 2011) was successfully held in Harbin, China on August17-19, 2011. This year’s conference continued its tradition of being the premier forum for presentation of results on cutting-edge research in telecommunications and networking, bringing together Chinese and international researchers and practitioners for discussions on the latest development in information and communication technologies. The conference attracted 196 international registrants from 12 countries in Asia Pacific, North America and Europe.

 

The Technical Program Committee did an outstanding job in organizing a diverse technical programconsistingof foursymposia that covered a broad range of research areas in information and communication technologies. Under the excellent leadership of TPC Co-chairs Prof. Weixiao Meng, Prof. Fumiyuki Adachi and Prof. Qilian Liang, 193 TPC members from 29 countries handled the reviews of 397 papers submitted through the open call with 3.2 reviews per paper on average. From these open submissions, 206 papers were presented in 41 technical sessions that included additionally 14 invited papers and 26 special session papers. Based on the reviews, the TPC selected 8 papers from the different symposia for the “Best Paper Awards”, and another 8 papers co-authored by students for the “Best Student Paper Awards”. The conference proceedings of Chinacom 2011 will be archived in IEEE Xplore and submitted for indexing by Engineering Index (EI). Several journal special issues collecting extended versions of selected best papers from the technical program are being organized. We anticipate that this body of work will provide important references to the technical community.

 

The technical program featuredthreeoutstanding keynote speakers from academia and industry:  Dr. Huidi Li, Dr. Rabinder Madanand Prof. Xuemin (Sherman) Shen, covering interesting topics such as future wireless networks, body area networks and non-linear systems. The Industry Panel Chair, Dr. Lan Chen, did a great job to organizean industrypanel session on “Future mobile communication, and its collaboration with broadcastandIOT(Internet of Things)”. The panel session was chaired by Dr. Suda Hirohito, President and CEO of DOCOMO Beijing Labs, and included seven technical experts from the telecommunications industry as panelists.

 

Before the main conference held in 17-19 August, 4 workshops and 3 tutorials were conducted on 16 August.  The workshops covered hot topics such as cloud computing, network coding, high-speed rail communications and satellite communications. The tutorials provided surveys of current topics such as cognitive radios, 3G LTE/LTE-A, and underwater sensor networks.  Attendance of the tutorials was free for registrants of the main conference.

 

A gala banquet was held in the evening of 18 August, during which the best paper awards were presented and the organizers and location for Chinacom 2012 were introduced. The banquet featured a musical performance by several students from Harbin Institute of Technology, which was very much appreciated by the attendees.

 

The success of the conference was made possible owing very much to the tremendous efforts contributed by the local team from Harbin Institute of Technology, including several faculty members who served on the Organizing Committee and many student volunteers who assisted the conference attendees and the session chairs.
