ICT World Painted Green

We all know the negative impact that human development is having on the hearth of our Mother Earth. Climate changes, pollution, food shortage are just sample of the footprint of humanity in our green world.

Those problems are well known, and they all require investment and bright ideas on innovation. Innovation in processes, innovation in sustainable models, innovation in the way look at them by politicians and common people.

This is not the place for addressing all those aspects, and I don’t have the capabilities and power to do so. However, I’d like to make a point related to CO2 or carbon footprint of humanity.

Numbers may vary, but several studies agree on the fact that industrialization dramatically increased the amount of carbon emissions in the atmosphere – raising the values to dangerous threshold for occurence of the so-called “greenhouse effect”.

And the Internet represents apparently something like 2% of the overall picture, which is currently equivalent to the footprint of an industrializing country. However, this might change as some experts mention an Internet growth of 50x or 100x deriving from the wide adoption of the Net and its services, potentially making Internet (and thus ICT) a major actor on the scene, in terms of carbon emissions.

The point is: is it possible to reverse the process? what can ICT do to combat such forecasts?

In my opinion, ICT can make the difference (in positive). And such vision can be associated with two broad actions:

  1. Direct ICT actions: to reduce energy utilization in all fields of ICT (communications, computers, etc.). In computer science, the term “energy-proportional computing” is emerging; why not thinking of a broader “energy-proportional ICT”?
  2. Indirect ICT actions: to identify ICT solution to improve efficiency of existing systems (e.g. the power grid) or processes (e.g. low carbon emissions in cars, houses, etc.). In this framework, the concept of “smart grid” is central, i.e. to make smart usage of available and renewable energy.

Believing in such vision, for tthe forthcoming issues I’ll invite technical and feature articles on the lines above on ICaST to provide our readers with up-to-date information. Clearly, open call contributions are also welcome!
