The Second International ICST Conference on Mobile Networks and Management (MONAMI) was held in Santander, Spain on 22-24 September 2010, hosted by the University of Cantabria. Santander, a modern cosmopolitan city with a rich historical past, appealing social and cultural background, and high-quality service offerings was the perfect backdrop for the second edition of the conference.
The technical program featured 29 papers, which were selected after a thorough peer review process based on their relevance to the scope of the conference and their technical merit. Thirty six Technical Program Committee members made sure that each submitted paper was reviewed by at least three competent researchers. The papers were organized by subject in seven sessions: Routing and Virtualization, Autonomic Networking, Mobility Management, Multiaccess Selection, Wireless Network Management, Wireless Networks and, finally, a session for papers presenting Future Research Directions. All papers were orally presented in a single-track format, with sufficient time allocated for discussion following each presentation, fostering active participation by all attendees.
The conference opened with a full-day tutorial on "Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communication" by domain experts Dr. Mischa Dohler and Dr. Jesús Alonso-Zárate of CTTC. During the session, the two presenters gave an introduction about the various challenges that M2M communication bring about, providing an overview of the various involved technologies and introducing the most relevant open research issues.
Professor Joan Serrat of Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya opened the second day of the conference with a keynote on "Service Management in Future Networks: The C3SEM Vision". The talk presented current service level management (SLM) practice and problems and discussed policies and pricing in autonomic network management.
José Manuel Hernández of Telefónica R+D gave the keynote on the third day of the conference entitled "SmartCities, the Silent IoT Revolution", which vividly presented the prospects in this growing research area. Hernadez opened the talk with a definition of "smart cities" and the socio-economic context within which they can play the role of growth engines in a modern economy. He then provided an overview on the European model for "smart cities" and concluded with the technological foundations for smart cities.
The conference closed with the awards ceremony. The Best Paper was awarded to Johnny Choque for his paper entitled "Optimum selection of access networks within heterogeneous wireless environments based on linear programming techniques". The Best Student Paper Award was granted to Yasir Zaki for the paper entitled "A novel LTE wireless virtualization framework".
On the social part of the conference, MONAMI attendees were welcomed with a reception at the main hall of the Telecommunications Engineering Research, Development and Innovation Building, followed by a sailing trip around the beautiful Santander bay on a schooner; departing from the "Grua de Piedra" (Stone Crane) and almost reaching the edge of the bay (close to "Cabo Mayor"), the trip offers a different view of the beach area, Magdalena Peninsula and Palace, etc. After the end of the second day of the conference, the conference participants were offered a guided tour of the Magdalena Palace, the former summer residence of the Spanish Royal Family, followed by the gala dinner, which took place at El Nuevo Molino, a place with a charming atmosphere, where all attendees enjoyed a delicious four-course menu.
Finally, the General Chair Dr. Kostas Pentikousis closed the conference announcing that the third edition of MONAMI will be organized by University of Aveiro, in September 2011.
We would like to acknowledge the hard work and support of all those who made MONAMI 2010 a very successful event. First, we thank Prof. Imrich Chlamtac for his continuous support of the conference. We appreciate the hard work of all TPC members (and the additional reviewers) to provide constructive, fair, and timely reviews. We thank the folks at ICST, especially Gergely Nagy, for managing in close coordination with the executive committee all conference matters, and Gabor Szalay for his onsite support. Finally, we express our gratitude to our Web Chair, Jarno Pinola, for his outstanding work on the web site, and the entire staff of the Network Planning and Mobile Communications Laboratory at University of Cantabria for their generous hospitality and proficient handling of all local arrangements.
